Russia accuses Ukraine of shooting down military plane carrying 65 Ukrainian POWs

Russia on Wednesday accused Kyiv of shooting down a military transport plane, killing all 74 people on board including 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war. “On board the plane were six crew members, 65 Ukrainian military personnel for the exchange and three Russian military personnel accompanying them. The Defense Ministry said that Ukraine’s government “knew very well that, according to established practice,” a military transport aircraft would be flying that route ahead of the planned prisoner swap. Andriy Yusov, a spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence, confirmed that a prisoner exchange had been due to take place Wednesday. As influential Ukrainian social media accounts pushed back on the Russian claims, a former Ukrainian POW dismissed the suggestion that there would be just 3 Russian guards on board the flight for 65 Ukrainian prisoners.
